Students’ home languages are an asset! Students can use their native language along with their new language when writing and / or speaking with each other. Using multiple languages together is called "translanguaging." For example, you can use books that intersperse words in different languages through the text, accept work submitted using the home language, stay attuned to the way students are drawing upon both languages, welcome all of students' languages, and show students how they are drawing upon all of their linguistic assets when they translanguage.
